isn't it funny
isn't it funny
-- grace
isn't it funny
how yesterday
i met babies in diapers
screaming, crying
blobs
in a lively church.
yet yesterday
we sent people off
in wreathes of flowers.
celebration of life
empty spaces that could never be filled.
yet yesterday
the babies became third graders,
forever ingrained in my head?
yet yesterday
we climbed trees
running
with no care
but today
i saw one of them
living, breathing,
taller than he's ever been,
walking through the halls of
my high school?
and today
i am a senior—
4th grade me immortalized
who am i now?
i don't think i can be a child anymore
but i don't feel old enough
to be
king of the jungle
for the third time in a life
it almost hurts
living
breathing
drowning
in the air
life
living
in
chapters
people,
markers of time
against the wall of life.
driftwood.
don't
let
go
of
special
people.
i guess
we live
to love
it is colorless
it is meaningless
otherwise
